LMS expands elastometric flow control valve capabilities and competencies - new electric plastics press

Midland, Michigan, March 30, 2009 – LMS, one of the largest manufacturers of silicone valve assemblies in the world, recently purchased a Toshiba 110-ton electric plastics injection-molding machine.

This addition allows LMS to produce plastic and valve subcomponents in-house while complementing their partnerships with domestic plastic molders, as well as those in Asia and Mexico. The machine has the ability to utilize a variety of thermoplastics and TPE’s in production. Unlike hydraulic presses, which require hydraulic oils to operate, electric presses have no such requirement. The absence of hydraulic oil makes this press more suitable for Clean Room molding of medical related assemblies, a major market for LMS.

When asked about purchasing the electric press, Greg Cole, LMS Senior Process Engineer, had this to say “… electric presses are much more consistent than hydraulic presses. This will allow for a much more capable process and allow us to stay inside a tighter process window.” The increased capacity the machine provides aligns well with the company’s specialization in close-tolerance elastomeric valves. The electric press ensures that critical dimensions are met and that valves assemble and function properly in the plastic assemblies.

The new electric press only strengthens LMS’s business model of being a solutions provider, and not simply a silicone/rubber molder. In addition to providing more control with manufacturing of plastic sub assemblies, the press shortens lead times for assembly solutions and decreases transportation and tariff costs. With the economic challenges manufacturers face today, cost reduction is always a consideration in LMS’s solutions-focused approach. The electric press is one more benefit to a long list of advantages customers find when working with LMS, such as a full engineering department, in house mold building, in-depth test lab services, and a Class 10000 – ISO 13485 Clean Room.
